Get KOS
Start with Starter Kit v1.2.0, the free, Apache-2.0-licensed distribution of KOS Community 1.0.0. Choose a new installation, a supported upgrade, or an existing Obsidian vault.
New installation
You are starting with KOS for the first time, in a new folder.

Check prerequisites
Use PowerShell 5.1 or 7, or Bash 4+ with Python 3.10+. Choose a new or empty target folder.

Use the release ZIP and follow its versioned installation guide.

Inspect the proposed new installation before applying the plan.

Create and validate
Apply the reviewed plan, validate the result, and begin with one active project.

Keep a verified copy outside the folder you are changing. Transaction backups cover only changed files.

Check the supported upgrade path
The v1.2.0 release supports upgrading a supported Starter Kit 1.1 installation. Review the operation guide for detection and conflicts.

Review and approve the plan
Start with a dry-run. Resolve conflicts and explicitly approve the upgrade; an answer file alone is not approval.

Validate the result
Check the installation, project files, decisions, and handoffs. Interrupted operations require journal review.

Make and verify a separate copy before enhancing the existing Obsidian vault.

Choose the enhance operation
The minimal profile adds the foundation and routing; the complete profile adds missing numbered domains.

Review the dry-run and approve
Review proposed additions and conflicts before explicitly approving. Existing notes remain in place and .obsidian configuration is retained.

Check links and the plugins you rely on. The bounded link audit does not cover every plugin or link form.
